Trent Cole, Pro Bowl defensive end for the Eagles, is the 73rd best player in all of football, according to NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2011 list. The ranking, which was voted on by current NFL players, lands Cole ahead of such high-caliber defensive ends as Jared Allen and Jason Babin.
While I’m curious to see which DEs ultimately land higher on the list than Cole, I’m comfortable with 73. Cole, in my opinion, has consistently been one of the most underrated defensive players in the league, averaging 10 sacks a year for the Birds since 2006. He’s a game changer and a perennial force on the line, missing less than one game per season. It’s good to see Cole get the recognition he deserves, though I would have liked to see him fall one spot higher and edge out Tony Romo.
Other Eagles in the Top 100 include Desean Jackson, Asante Samuel, and Michel Vick. Here’s hoping we won’t see any of them on the list anytime soon.
