Because I’m too pissed off to actually construct paragraphs right now, here are some talking points regarding today’s pathetic loss, embarrassment, disgraceful effort, or whatever the Hell else you want to call it.
1 ) Right around the five-minute mark in the third quarter, Andy Reid should tap Mike Kafka on the shoulder and get him loose. Someone needs to let Michael Vick know that you don’t get credit for quality starts in football–you have to finish the game. You can’t go 45 minutes and turn it over to your closer, especially if it’s Kafka.
2 ) According to Les Bowen, Michael Vick was buttoning his shirt with his right hand in the locker room after the game. That like totally means the Eagles should rush him back for Sunday’s game so he can play three ineffective quarters and then turn things over to Kafka, right?
3 ) Casey Matthews sucks. How’s that for some expert analysis? To get beaten the way he did by Brandon Jacobs on the Giants first score tells me all I need to know about Matthews. He can’t play in the middle and his supposedly terrific instincts are non-existent. How can Matthews’ bite and get burned that badly on that touchdown by Jacobs when his only responsibility is the running back? That cannot happen. The Eagles have to get him off the field. I’d rather watch Casey Anthony than Casey Mattews on the weakside at this point. Too soon?
4 ) Vick finished the game 16-23 for 176 yards, which at first glance is respectable, but he wasn’t particularly good in this game. Although the interception wasn’t his fault (great job by Steve Smith today), he was lucky to avoid an interception by Michael Boley on a terrible pass that was forced to Jason Avant. He also fumbled, but that ball was luckily recovered by Jason Peters. Whenever Vick is on the field again he needs to protect the damn football.
5 ) So much for that terrible Giants secondary. Where were the explosive playmakers roaming free all over the field?
6 ) Sorry, but Steve Smith stinks. He’s shown no evidence whatsoever that he is still the clutch possession receiver he was in New York. Not only has he not produced, he also was responsible for the costly interception that killed what would have been the game’s first score.
7 ) Interesting notes from CSN’s Reuben Frank:
Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins are the first Eagles tandem to each have four sacks through a season’s first three games since 1991.
This is the first time since 1989 that the Eagles allowed four touchdown passes in consecutive games since 1989 when Mark Rypien and Joe Montana accomplished the feat.
8 ) LeSean McCoy is fantastic.
9 ) When was the last time the Eagles called eight straight run plays like they did in the first half of today’s game?
10 )The way the Eagles handled Vick’s broken hand was a disgrace. He’s either in or out. Not out, then in, then out.
