Welp, last week sucked. It’s no secret that I was way off on my expectation that the Eagles would not only win, but cover the 9.5 point spread in convincing fashion. That brings my Eagles betting record to a completely mediore 1-1-1 through three games so far.
With the 49ers in town this week, it is a good opportunity for the Eagles to rebound against a less-than-good opponent. Although the 49ers are 2-1 so far, they have faced some weak opponents and their record doesn’t accurately reflect the level of talent in San Francisco. I believe the 49ers are the beneficiaries of some inflated confidence right now and the Eagles are primed to bring them back to Earth.
Betting web sites are begging you to take the 49ers this weekend. The line currently stands at Eagles -9, and they’ve put it just high enough to make you think “that’s a lot of points for a team that’s had a banged up quarterback for the last couple weeks.” The Niners are 2-1 and they have a formidable tight end and running back (even though Gore has had a slow start), two positions which seem to expose the Eagles’ weaknesses the most. The Eagles have had a hectic week, making a couple changes to their defensive starters and creating enough drama with the status of their quarterback that it caused a couple of Eagles beat writers to slug it out in the press room.
The early-season turmoil is the story they’re banking on to make bettors say “that’s way too many points for the Eagles to lay right now.” I say it’s not enough points. The Eagles are coming off of two really bad-tasting losses. They lost a heartbreaker in Atlanta during week two that came down to the wire. Last week, they got embarrassed in their home opener by a Giants team that just wanted it more than the Eagles did. The Birds will take the field again Sunday in front of a home crowd, and you better believe that place will be fired up. We like to stay away from using the term “must-win” this early in the season, but that’s exactly what this game is if the Eagles plan on making any waves in the NFC this season.
Look for 13+ point Eagles win that could turn into an even more lopsided blowout if the 49ers flip the switch to “pass-heavy chase mode” at the end. Take the Eagles -9 and talk to me next week.
