For DeSean Jackson, it’s one thing to grossly underperform, failing to make the signature plays that fans have grown accustomed to watching. But it’s another thing to miss, for whatever reason, a team meeting on the precipice of their absolute last gasp of resurrecting a train wreck of a season.
But that’s the decision that DeSean Jackson has reportedly chosen to make. And the Eagles have wasted little time making theirs.
DeSean Jackson will not play today against the Cardinals.
Much will be said about Jackson’s unexcused absence and even more will be said about the Eagles’ decision to bench Jackson. Frankly, the Eagles shouldn’t need the once explosive playmaker to win this game, particularly given how dismal he’s been over the last month. But there’s a bigger picture here.
Careless and stupid decisions have overshadowed the Eagles’ considerable talent on the field so it’s perfectly appropriate that the fourth-year wide receiver decided to pull something like this. It perfectly encapsulates the heartless, gutless and otherwise indifferent approach this team has played with since the opening gun.
Jackson, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, hasn’t made much progress with the Eagles on a new deal. And when you consider his declining production, delusional self-assessment of his own worth and now this–an egregious and careless decision on his part, it’s hard to imagine anyway that Jackson will be back here next season.
From this perspective–whatever.
