There were two coaching moves made today that have thrown some wrenches into the Steve Spagnuolo sweepstakes. The first one was the Falcons hiring Mike Nolan as their defensive coordinator. That hiring means that Spagnuolo will obviously not be headed to the ATL and should put the Eagles one step closer to being able to hire Spags as their defensive coordinator.
The second change is the firing of Jim Caldwell as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. There has been speculation that the new GM in Indianapolis, Ryan Grigson, who is the former Director of Player Personnel for the Ealges, is interested in bringing Eagles’ offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg in as head coach. This opens a whole new can of worms regarding Spagnuolo.
If Mornhinweg does go to Indianapolis, he could bring in Spagnuolo with him as defensive coordinator. Of course, there is also the possibility that Grigson could hire Spagnuolo as the head coach of the Colts even though he is fresh off a tumultuous stint as the head honcho in St. Louis.
Then, there’s the Saints. There has been suggestions that Spagnuolo would enjoy the high exposure that comes with heading the defense of one of the league’s sexiest teams. As of right now, Steve Spagnuolo hasn’t hinted at where he could go and there hasn’t been any definitive implications about his next landing spot. What we do know is that Andy Reid has yet to speak, and the reason for that is becoming increasingly curious.
So the wait continues.
