When the Eagles brought in former Cowboys’ punter Mat McBriar to create competition for second-year punter Chas Henry the writing appeared to on the wall. It was McBriar’s job to lose. Despite a solid preseason performance from the Aussie, the Eagles have decided to stick with the incumbent Henry when they open the 2012 regular season next weekend.
According to McBriar’s agent, Jack Bechta, the Eagles have released his client.
“The Eagles release Punter Mat McBriar. I suspect he will be snapped up quickly,” Bechta wrote in a tweet.
McBriar and Henry were both solid, but after a season in which Eagles kicker Alex Henery set the NFL all-time rookie accuracy record with Henry as the holder, the Eagles may have been reluctant to mess with the field goal operation.
Bechta is right–McBriar will likely be snapped up quickly, but for the Eagles it just made sense to go with youth and comfort.
