Move over Chip and welcome…Fipp?
Yeah, I know. It’s kind of weird. But the Eagles will reportedly hire assistant Dolphins special teams coach Dave Fipp to run a unit that was simply awful a year ago under new Raiders special teams coordinator Bobby April.
While the Eagles haven’t confirmed the move, Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin told CSNPhilly.com’s Geoff Mosher that Fipp will indeed make the move to Philadelphia.
Fipp was seen wearing Eagles gear Wednesday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
As CSNPhilly.com’s Reuben Frank points out, the 38-year-old Fipp was Chris Gocong’s defense coordinator at Cal Poly when the former Eagles linebacker was an All-American.
Fipp also spent time coaching special teams in San Fransico under head coaches Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary.
Miami’s special teams were ranked second overall in Rick Gosselin’s annual rankings which we looked at the other day. The Dolphins were the only team in the top five of those rankings not to qualify for the postseason.
As for the Eagles 2012 performance?
Perhaps the only surprise is that they didn’t finish last in Gosselin’s rankings. They graded out 28th overall, ahead of only Oakland, Detroit, Washington and Carolina.
Fipp will be the Eagles’ fifth special teams coordinator in seven seasons.
