2013 NFL Mock Draft: The Eagles Select…(Pre-Combine Edition)

Our friends over at NFLMocks have released their pre-combine mock draft and it features someone other than Texas A&M tackle Luke Joeckel or Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner.

Enter Utah defensive tackle Star Lotuelelei. Here’s the breakdown.

The Eagles are getting their starting OTs back from injury, and they just re-signed Michael Vick, indicating to me that he’ll start this season. The one thing they truly lack personnel wise is a nose tackle for their new 3-4 defense. Lotulelei is a workhorse who could fill that role.

My initial evaluations of this draft class along with Philadelphia’s most pressing needs had me mocking the versatile defensive tackle to the Eagles with the fourth pick, but as we draw closer to the NFL Scouting Combine, I’m no longer so sure about Lotulelei with the Eagles.

New defensive coordinator Billy Davis will implement some variation of a 3-4 look, but it may not be the traditional set we are accustomed to seeing. If the Eagles do in fact convert to a full-fledged 3-4 front, then a difference making defensive tackle is a piece they must add. Still, the team’s dire need to upgrade the secondary along with the quality of depth at defensive tackle has me steering away from Lotulelei this early in the draft.

Here’s a look at the massive defensive tackle at his best.

If the Eagles stay 4-3 Star is the way to go. If they go 3-4 or 4-3 under they need a SAM or OLB. Dion Jordan is a freak and resembles Aldon Smith. I think they should draft him.
