Draft Report: Eagles Could Add A Tight End

Even before Chip Kelly took the job to become the Eagles Head Coach, Kelly was linked to Bill Belichick because they both run very similar, up-tempo offenses that are known for the ability to score tons and tons of points in short time spans. Another reason that these two coaches are linked together is because they both love using their tight ends and both find creative ways to get them involved. The Eagles already have one All Pro tight end on their roster, Brent Celek, and added a very versatile tight end this off-season, James Casey, but the Eagles may not be done yet. Casey can play full back as well, which gives Chip Kelly the ability to go out and draft another tight end. Tight ends are very hard to cover becasue, as the old saying goes, they are to fast and athletic for linebackers to cover and to big and strong for a safety to cover. With this being said here is a brief list of tight ends who the Eagles may target next Thursday.

Zach Ertz: Ertz is the second best tight end available in the draft and it has been reported that he is the highest rated tight end on the Eagles board. Ertz is a very versatile weapon, which is something Chip Kelly has stressed that he wants. Ertz has shown “Hernandez-like” versatility by lineing up on the line, outside, and even in the back field. I love Ertz a lot and it wouldn’t surprise me if Chip Kelly did go target Ertz with the Eagles first pick in the 2nd or possibly even trading back into the second.

Travis Kelce: Travis Kelce has blood lines in Philadelphia and would be a nice fit for the Eagles. Kelce, just like many of the tight ends this year, has great athleticism and can line up all over the field, but he is also tough in the run game, probably a skill he learned from his older brother Jason. Due to off the field issues, Kelce may slip and the Eagles could get great value for Kelce on day 3.

Gavin Escobar: Heading into the combine, Escobar was arguably the 3rd best tight end on the board, but due to a weak performance, Escobar’s stock has dropped. Greg Cosell, of NFL Films, recently compared Escobar to Jimmy Graham. his is exactly who come to mind when you watch Escobar play and would give the Eagles another big target in the pass game.

These are just a few names that have popped up over recent days and I do expect Chip Kelly to draft a tight end in this draft, but who it will be, my guess is as good as any. With less than week to go, things are bound to get bey interesting.
