Eagles Cut Roster Down to 53

The Eagles finished up their cuts today to get their roster down to 53 guys. While the Eagles are at 53, don’t expect this group of guys will be the ones you see against Washington. There will be more cuts and additions as the Eagles put in claims for guys cut from other teams. Here are todays cuts.

OG Danny Watkins - Eagles 1st round pick from 2011. One of the biggest busts in recent franchise history. Never established himself as a good NFL player, and at 29 years old I wouldn’t be surprised if his career is over. He never showed any passion for the game.

OLB Chris McCoy and Travis Long – McCoy was a big surprise. Thought he had a good shot as the 4th guy. Eagles are currently at 3 OLB. Expect that to change soon.

WR Greg Salas and Russell Shephard – Kind of a shocker that one of these guys didn’t make the team. Oregon Jeff Maehl, as of now, is the 5th guy but I think that will change. Shephard is a PS candidate.

TE Clay Harbor - Harbor was trying to make the team as either a TE or WR but never flashed anything to show he was worthy of the spot. I expect he’ll find a home somewhere else soon enough.

RB Matthew Tucker - Thought he had a shot at the 4th RB but didn’t show enough for the Eagles to carry the extra guy. He could also hit the PS.

OT Michael Bamiro - Bamiro showed some raw talent and I thought he might get buried on the 53, but the Eagles must feel Dennis Kelly will be coming back soon enough and will be their backup right tackle. I expect him to get to the PS unless a team grabs him before then.

S David Sims - Just not a great player, not really shocked. Doesn’t offer you anything more than Kurt Coleman or Colt Anderson.

There you have it. If I was WR Jeff Maehl, S Colt Anderson and/or Kurt Coleman, and CB Curtis Marsh and/or Brandon Hughes I wouldn’t get too complacent. They could be gone once Howie Roseman gets a crack at the waiver wire.
