Wow. That’s all I can say. What an impressive begin to Chip Kelly’s tenure as the new head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. There were no shortage of doubters in the NFL who said Kelly couldn’t make it work in the NFL. Well, I think he’s proven some people wrong.
53 plays in the first half. 77 plays total. 443 yards. 33 points. LeSean McCoy rushed 184 yards and a touchdown. DeSean Jackson had 104 yards receiving and a touchdown. Michael Vick passed for 203 yards and a TD, plus added one on the ground.
The offense looked unstoppable during the first half, minus a blown call on a forward pass that resulted in a touchdown for Washington’s defense. That would be the only points scored by Washington in the fhalf. Jackson had an extremely strong performance in the first half on offense, along with LeSean McCoy. Vick moved the ball well and spread it out. He threw a dart to TE Brent Celek for his 28 yard TD.
The defense also looked good in the first half, partially benefiting from a rusty RG3 but they need to be given credit for their first half performance. Trent Cole was making plays all over the field. Anyone who questioned whether Cole would be a casualty of the 3-4 switch needs to think again. He caused a fumble on Alfred Morris early in the game. He also had a sack, a few hits and was in on the safety in the first half.
ILB Mychal Kendricks went beast mode tonight. He made plays all over the field. He’s looking like the guy we’ve been hearing about in training camp and that’s a great thing for this Eagles defense. He had a ton of tackles, was good in coverage, and got pressure on RG3.
I loved what I saw from a few of the free agent additions. Cary Williams played lights out (sconce joke, hiyo). He had sack and an interception. I have a feeling the Eagles fans will be warming up to him soon enough if he keeps playing like this. He’s earned his pay check so far. Connor Barwin also had a strong game.
The Eagles blitz early and often. Griffin was sacked 3 times and was hit even more. CB Brandon Boykin made his first career interception. Fletcher Cox had success in the pass rush as well, along with Demeco Ryans.
There were definitely some things that the Eagles will need to work on. The second half was no where near as clean and efficient as the first. It almost felt like Kelly let off the gas a little too much. The offense couldn’t get anything going and the defense couldn’t stop RG3, who definitely played better as the game went on.
Rookie Jordan Poyer can in in relief of Cary Williams and RG3 took advantage of this. Patrick Chung terribly miss judged an easy interception that instead led to a Washington touchdown.
The team will need to learn how to close out in the NFL, but all in all it was an exciting debut for Chip Kelly and his new look Eagles. The Birds will be on a short week so you can bet Chip will be dissecting the film, if he hasn’t started already.
