Our sister site, NFLmocks.com, is doing their first NFL mock draft of 2014. And in it, they have the Philadelphia Eagles selecting Heisman Trophy winning Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. The highly-touted player out of Texas seems to fit perfectly in the high tempo, read option-based scheme new Eagles’ head coach Chip Kelly wishes to run in Philly. But the emergence of second year quarterback Nick Foles may make using a first round pick on yet another QB unwise. Especially with the teams’ various other needs, specifically on defense.
Here’s what Erik Lambert of NFL Mocks had to say about the Eagles’ projected first round pick:
#18 – Philadelphia Eagles – Johnny Manziel – QB – Texas A&M
“Chip Kelly doesn’t mind making a splash and he also doesn’t mind creating competition. Nick Foles has done enough to earn the starting job for 2013, but as far as the future goes that is not certain. So the Philadelphia Eagles stick to their plan to find a quarterback. They roll the dice on Johnny Manziel. His athleticism, toughness and playmaking ability would mesh well with the Kelly offense provided his arm strength isn’t called upon often.”
What do you think? Is Manziel the perfect fit for Philadelphia? And do you think he’s worth spending a first round pick on? Tell us what you think in the comment section!
