2014 NFL Mock Draft: Eagles Draft a Cowboy in the First Round

Our sister site, NFLmocks.com, has just released their latest NFL Mock Draft predictions for 2014. And in it, they have the Philadelphia Eagles deciding to go defensive in the first round. Here’s what of NFL Mocks had to say about the Eagles’ projected first round pick:

#21 – Philadelphia Eagles – Justin Gilbert – CB – Oklahoma State

“Chip Kelly seems to have the offense well in hand with the Philadelphia Eagles.  Nick Foles is entrenched at quarterback.  That means the needs shift to defense, particularly in the secondary where the Eagles have struggled all season.  Cornerback Justin Gilbert is one of the hot names out there and with good reason.  His blend of size and speed makes him an ideal press corner for Philadelphia’s 3-4 alignment.  He plays well in coverage, against the run and doesn’t lack a nose for the football either.  If the Eagles can get him and then improve their pass rush, things will really become interesting.”

Walter Football ranks Gilbert as the second best cornerback in the upcoming draft. Here’s their latest scouting report on him:

11/9/13: Gilbert has played well this year with 23 tackles, four interceptions and four passes broken up…Gilbert has size and ball skills. In 2011, he had interceptions against the top three quarterbacks in the 2012 NFL Draft; Stanford’s Andrew Luck, Baylor’s Robert Griffin and Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill. Gilbert plays in a pass-happy conference, so he should enter the NFL battle-tested and ready to start quickly.”

The Eagles should be considering many different possibilities with this pick. Although corner is a need, quarterback and wide receiver could also be addressed, depending on the play of current quarterback Nick Foles. Maybe even more importantly, this team needs a dominate pass rusher. Honestly, the franchise has a lot of needs and could go several different directions with this selection. It will probably simply come down to who’s available when it’s the Eagles turn to pick.
