Since the day Philadelphia Eagles hired Chip Kelly for the head coaching job there have been scores of articles written about his high-octane read-option offense. The narrative started with, “will his college system work?” Then speculation began that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick would work perfectly for his offense. The narrative started changing from will it work to it might work with Vick. The season started and Vick started having trouble. Then, inevitably the narrative turned to, “it won’t work.” Maybe some folks felt vindicated.
But I see it differently. Kelly is a lot smarter than people think. He doesn’t have a system. He is the system. He spent an entire off-season shaping his offense around Vick. Vick did not work out and now he has Philadelphia Eagles Nick Foles. An immobile quarterback. He does not fit into the read-option offense. But Kelly made it work with Foles and it works well. Give Kelly credit, he knows what he is doing.
