Future Uncertain For Eagles’ Michael Vick

In an interview with CSN Philly Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick believes his football career is far from over. When asked if thought he would play again he responded,

I’m playing again next year, that’s the way I look at it. I know at some point I’ll be back out there.

But at 34 years of age and his propensity to injury it is doubtful not impossible, that a team would want him as a starter. Vick is still a play maker with his running ability and his amazing arm but he has limitations. After 12 seasons he still has difficulties reading defenses. This causes major problems for the team. I have said he could not pick up a blitz even if the defensive line were holding up cue cards. I know that is harsh but at this level that inability is unacceptable.

I think part of the problem he can’t read defenses lies in his early years as a quarterback. It didn’t matter if the opponent blitzed, he could evade and outrun almost any situation. His speed though was an asset is proving to be a detriment to him now. He has lost a step or two but can still run like the wind. But usually defenses are ready for him to run and close any holes when he makes his move.

However, he is open to returning to the Eagles as the number 2 quarterback. That shows great maturity on his part.

Yeah, if it doesn’t work out, if all else fails, absolutely, you can never rule that out. It all depends what happens, where I’m at in my career. Never rule it out. But I’m not thinking of that right now. I’m not thinking about the future. I’m just thinking about doing whatever I can to help this team win a Super Bowl.

The above sentiment shows how far Vick has come in his maturity both as a player and an individual. Those statements show class all the way.

In a recent poll published here a few days ago the vote was very one-sided. You, Eagles Fans, want to keep Vick as the backup. I feel the same way. He has a few good years left and the Eagles are entering into an era of greatness in my opinion. It would be beneficial for the team to have a veteran backup quarterback on the sideline. Time will tell of course but it will be interesting to see what happens to Vick.
