Would You Want Johnny Manziel As An Eagle?

Dec 31, 2013; Atlanta, GA, USA; Texas A

Here is my take…

The 2014 NFL Draft is months away but the speculation wheels are spinning. The Philadelphia Eagles have many needs to fill before the start of the 2014 NFL regular season. Coming off a record-setting season Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles it’s hard to picture a quarterback need. However, as crazy as it sounds Philadelphia Eagles may need a good back-up quarterback. Foles doesn’t have a clear backup right now. With Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick wants to be a starter and they don’t need a second starter and quarterback Matt Barkley did not look ready to step in any time soon. And, since Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly likes his starters to compete for their jobs it isn’t a terrible stretch to think the Eagles could trade the Texans for the first pick in the draft and grab Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.

I am not asking you to believe he could be drafted by the Eagles. I am asking IF he could would you want him as an Eagle?

As the author of this article and editor of the site I would love you to elaborate on your comment. Is it the thought of Manziel joining the Eagles or that he would do well?

  • Djc

I think it’s the premise of your article (and another of your articles you posted recently) that spurs that kind of reaction. Trading up to the #1 slot to take Manziel? Dumb. Not only is he not the best player in the draft but he’s not even the top QB in the draft. On top of that you don’t spend a 1st round pick on a QB to be your backup.

Your last article had the eagles trading the 22nd overall + Barkley to the texans for the #1 overall. How you can even hint at that being a viable trade completely ruins any credibility you have about the NFL

    Pridenpoise, DJC.

I digress. I appreciate your honesty. And I have to say looking back over the article I have some honesty for both of you. It was a stretch for me to post that information about the “trade possibility” to get Manziel. I was trying to think of a way to get him into the Eagles arena for discussion. I pushed too far and wrote some bad stuff.

    I appreciate your honesty.

It’s all good Todd. I think sitting at #22 there is a possibility of Manziel being there anyway.
I feel like my response was a little too mean and would like to apologize for that. You are writing from the heart about my favorite team and sometimes I can be a little overly passionate.

  • Todd

No apology necessary. I like to hear what the faithful really feel. You were right. I think you are also right in that he may still be there at 22. Kelly is too smart to really draft him in the first round. The offense is in pretty good shape, but our defense is struggling.

However, I think Manziel is another Tebow in the making. The difference is Johnny can really throw but he is way too slight of frame to take the pounding the NFL Linebackers will deliver. He is smaller than Vick so I don’t think he will translate well in the NFL.
