The Philadelphia Eagles steadily improved throughout the 2013-2014 season. Finishing at 10-6 and taking the NFC East crown. Before that season you can see the change in the team and it started in the off-season. The moves in the 2013 off-season jump started this successful season. Making smart free agency moves that wouldn’t put the team in a bind if they turned out to be busts. Philadelphia Eagles outside linebacker Connor Barwin, cornerback Cary Williams, safeties Patrick Chung, and Kenny Phillips are a good example of smart free agency moves. All these move were planned perfectly. Even if certain players didn’t pan out, the team wasn’t effected in salary cap and still had depth. The 2010 and 2011 drafts still haunt Eagles fans everywhere. The Eagles were reaching for players based off need and essentially crippled the team. But it seems like Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman finally developed a blueprint on how to have a good draft. The 2012 and 2013 drafts have yielded great results. The team now has a young core of players that can produce on the field and lead the team. These moves put the team in a situation to win. Things are looking up in Philadelphia. The team is going to need another productive off-season this year.
So this upcoming off-season should prove to be crucial in the team’s success and molding into one of the NFL’s elite teams. I expect the Philadelphia Eagles to follow last year’s off-season plan. Sign undervalued players to decent sized contracts and fill the holes the team have. And in the upcoming 2014 NFL draft, the team has gone to the “best available” style instead of need. With glaring holes in the defense and depth issues on offense the Philadelphia Eagles should put their careful approach in free agency, and best available system in the draft to bolster and upgrade their roster into a contender. Another solid off-season is needed once again this year to accomplish this. This season brings new obstacles and needs, but with the teams past success there’s hope and a feeling in the players and fans that the Philadelphia Eagles are on the right path once again. Gone are the days of mediocrity. This team has the making and the attitude of a winner. The Eagles are looking to take the next step and this off-season couldn’t be more crucial. If things go as planned, the Philadelphia Eagles can be one of the NFL’s best. Becoming a major contender is on the horizon.
