Five days after the start of Free Agency and former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is still looking for a starting job. At the beginning of the week several teams were looking at him. The New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders to name a few. There were rumors of other teams but nothing confirmed. The Minnesota Vikings re-signed quarterback Matt Cassell and Tampa Bay signed quarterback Josh McCown.
The Jets and the Raiders are reportedly still interested. NJ.com reports that talks between Vick and the Jets have stalled. There is a question of who would be the starter for the Jets next year. So Vick is taking his time at this point. I am not sure that is the best move on his part given the opportunities are slowly dwindling away. His options are not great so he really needs to move.
I think it may be beneficial for both Vick and the Byrds to continue their relationship next season and possibly two. Vick needs a home and it really doesn’t look like there is a starting job out there for him. I can’t imagine him going to another team to serve as a backup would be appealing to him. So if he is destined to be a back up he should stay with the Eagles.
The Eagles’ benefit would be greater. With quarterback Nick Foles as the obvious starter the depth chart drops off a cliff after that. Quarterback Matt Barkley isn’t ready for the pros yet. If he will ever be. So the Eagles need a good back up quarterback. Vick knows the players and the offense. He is the obvious choice at this point. I hope the Eagles re-hire him for a couple of more seasons. That makes the most sense to me.
