So how do you feel about the Eagles a week after the 2014 NFL Draft? They surprised most fans with choosing Louisville Cardinals defensive end Marcus Smith in the first round. Going into last week’s 2014 NFL Draft many Eagles fans had high hopes for the Philadelphia Eagles upcoming season. As the 22nd pick neared it almost felt like Christmas morning. Then the trade was announced. The Eagles moved down four spots to number 26. More waiting. Then the pick was in. With a decent Free Agency in the books the sky was the limit. Then, Marcus Smith was announced.
Twitter reaction was mixed but tilted negative…
But there was a positive tweet here and there,
A week later and that first round draft pick is still a head scratcher. It seems the optimism that was once there may have waned a little. Some of the other picks later in the weekend were OK but it was hard to get past that first one. The Eagles’ faithful are right back where they started before the draft. Filled with anticipation but now some doubt may be creeping in. And now the waiting begins again.
Months ago I posted a poll asking if you felt if the Eagles completely botched the draft would they still have a chance to win the Super Bowl. The majority of you said yes. I, like many of you believe the main reason we have that optimism is because of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is at the helm. He amazed us last year by winning the NFC East in his first year. And with virtually the same team the Eagles were the year before with a 4 – 12 record.
The first pick made me pause for a minute. I still don’t like it a week later. But maybe Kelly saw something we didn’t. I can’t wait for the pre-season to begin now to see how we look. I am still optimistic but cautiously so.
