Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins is proving to be a diamond in the rough. In his sixth season he faces challenges in adapting to a new defense. It’s more about learning the terminology. He understands how defenses and how positions work. But as Philadelphia Eagles head coach pointed out
I think he’s an extremely intelligent football player and that obviously showed just from the first day we got a chance to get on the field with them.
One of the few, big challenges Jenkins faces with his new squad is the Chip Kelly Way of doing things. It’s high reps, up-tempo practices at this point. Not only is Jenkins responsible for learning the new terminology, new defense but he has to carry out these new tasks at break-neck speed. It’s been an interesting week for Jenkins. Asked how we was acclimating,
Yeah, they’re very different, the pace and amount of reps you get in practice is a high volume, and they do a great job of taking care of us as well, taking care of our bodies, making sure we’re recovered, making sure guys aren’t injured. So it’s a unique way to get a lot of reps without getting anybody hurt and I think that’s a fine line that you walk and they found a really cool way of doing it
Jenkins appears to be the one defensive back picked up this off-season slated to start. He’s a versatile defensive player familiar with many different positions. He understands the stress the cornerbacks are under because he’s been there. He’ll be a great asset for the Eagles defensive squad. And if you watched them last year, you will understand what I mean. The got better as the season wore on but they still needed help.
