Eagles' Cedric Thornton To Box His Way To The Quarterback

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Cedric Thornton was disappointed with his sack production last season. With only one it’s easy to dismiss him as a productive member of the defensive line. He’s good at stopping the run which is always needed but he would like to get to the quarterback more. He’s happy with the run defense but he has a hard time knowing he lacks the sack count.

“With pass rushing you want to have your hands and feet on the same level, so when you flip your hips and your hands it all coordinates together. Boxing is really what we do without punching in the face.”  – Cedric Thornton

But he has a plan. During this off-season he took up boxing with the hopes of gaining the skill needed to bypass the offensive line on his way to the quarterback.

With this new skill along with Philadelphia Eagles rookie defensive lineman Marcus Smith he may have more success this year. If Smith is as good as some beleive opposing teams may double team him giving Thornton a crack a the quarterback. Or, he may be a one trick pony. Not sure boxing will help him. Let’s just hope it doesn’t hurt his ability to stop the run.
