Philadelphia Eagles are set to play the New England Patriots tonight after losing to the Chicago Bears last week. In preseason, results are not important but individual performances do matter. Many players have a lot to play for in preseason; some are competing for a roster spot whilst others are competing for a starting job when the season starts. These 5 players below did not play particularly well against the Bears and they will be under some pressure to perform tonight:
1. Nick Foles
There is no quarterback controversy. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles is the starter and nothing in preseason, barring injury, can change that. However, quarterback Mark Sanchez is a very good backup and he should have no problem lighting it up against the opposing teams backup defense. Foles had a poor game against the Bears and threw two interceptions and never really looked comfortable when under pressure. The Eagles offensive line were superb last year and protected him well but when under pressure Foles rarely crumbled and showed good decision making. However, against the Bears, Foles crumbled when under pressure. He made bad decisions, his footwork was poor and he rarely set his feet before throwing; causing him to throw off balance which caused poor accuracy. Hopefully the offensive line will protect him better but when under pressure he needs to perform better. If Foles has another bad game pressure will start to mount on him a little.
2. Allen Barbre
Eagles offensive lineman Allen Barbre is competing for the starting position until Lane Johnson returns from his 4 game suspension. Barbre looked poor against the Bears and struggle to handle Bears lineman Willie Young. Although Barbre has taken all the first team reps in training camp he is not a lock for the starting position. If Barbre struggles again the Eagles will have to consider whether or not to start another offensive lineman instead of him, maybe Dennis Kelly or Matt Tobin, both who had excellent games against the Bears. The Eagles need Barbre, or someone else, to improve quickly and play well until Lane Johnson returns or they may struggle on the offensive line for the first 4 weeks.
