No, this isn’t a rumor or a quote from an unknown source. According to CSNPhilly.com during a press conference before Sunday’s practice, Philadelphia Eagles head coach was asked if he was interested in trading quarterback Mark Sanchez. Now, Kelly isn’t known for answering hypothetical questions. But today was different.
Kelly of all coaches knows the importance of a good back up quarterback. Sanchez has had a good preseason with the Eagles. He’s gone from “Mr. Butt-Fumble” to “Mr. Getting it Done.” So far this season he’s completed 18 of 22 passes for 196 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley is a different story. In his two preseason games he’s completed 16 of 28 for 205 yards two touchdowns and two interceptions. And one fumble. The team seems to fall apart when he’s on the field. And the numbers don’t tell the entire story. Against the Chicago Bears he had one drive from his own four yard line for a touchdown. The next possession? 0 for 7 and an interception.
This is one of the few times I question Kelly’s thought process. Does he honestly want to trade away Mark Sanchez so the Birds can have Barkley as a backup quarterback? And what would Kelly consider a good enough deal to risk the season’s future on a current third string quarterback?
What do you think would be a good enough deal? Is Kelly as crazy he sounds?
