Eagles Kelly: More Production Needed from Marcus Smith

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Marcus Smith is on Chip Kelly’s radar. And it’s not good. I, along with a lot of other fans scratched their heads when the Eagles called up Smith on draft day.  They traded down two spots and then picked him up. I complained in a couple of articles and now I have more fuel for my concern.

“He’s got a burst, he’s got some speed coming off the edge. But if you’re going to play that many plays, we’re going to need more production out of you. (He’s) still working at it, still got a lot of things to improve on. That’s what the preseason is all about.”-Chip Kelly

After 70 snaps against the New England Patriots Friday and Kelly isn’t impressed. In today’s NFL as I said before, a first round draft pick, especially a defender, needs to produce immediately. Prior to the draft Smith was seen as a project at best. Without a good pass rusher the Eagles will struggle to do well in the post season, provided they get there.

With any luck, maybe Smith will be motivated by Kelly’s latest statements. But realistically he will likely not get up to speed. Usually if a player doesn’t have it by now, it’s not going to happen. I guess there is always next year for the rookie.
