Philadelphia Eagles Kicker Discover Kicks Just Keep Getting Harder To Find
After news of the Eagles parting ways with undrafted free agent running back David Fluellen, the announcement later in the day came that the Eagles have traded the same running back, whose release did not take place until 4 PM on Wednesday August 20, 2014. The trade involves sending Fluellen to the Indianapolis Colts for kicker Cody Parkey.
Parkey was himself recently announced as cut by the Colts. This news merely swaps two players who would not make the rosters of their original team.
Parkey was signed to the Colts as an undrafted free agent rookie from Auburn. He led college football with 69 touchbacks in 2013, and was 15 of 21 on field goals. He has some boom in his leg, as he hit 5 of 6 from 40-49 yards and 1 of 4 from beyond 50 yards. He also made 62 of 63 PATs.
There is no surprise that the Eagles need to give serious competition to the kicker position, as misses from deep distances, coupled with a lack of touchbacks, has certainly been the talk of the town the entire off season.
This is by no means a sign that the Eagles are handing the keys to all kicking responsibilities over to Parkey. But, Alex Henery was just placed on notice.
Like an an old Paul Revere and the Raiders song:
Don’t it seem like
Kicks just keep gettin’ harder to find
And all your kicks ain’t bringin’ you peace of mind
Before you find out it’s too late, girl
You better get straight
