Eagles VS Steelers: Five Things You Need To Know About Pittsburgh

The Philadelphia Eagles will be facing the Pittsburgh Steelers in a few hours and Kim Myers, a writer for Nice Pick Cowher” (FanSided’s website for the Pittsburgh Steelers) answered five questions about Pennsylvania’s other NFL franchise. Here is what you need to know about the Steelers.

1) Marcus Gilbert signed an extension to keep him with Pittsburgh until 2019. The future of the offensive line looks bright, but what is the feeling regarding this season?

The outlook for the offensive line is the most positive it’s been in years for this season. With Mike Munchak coaching the line looks to be one of the best and most stable units on the squad, if they can all remain healthy. Marcus Gilbert’s extension was expected and the expectations are for him to only keep improving as he has done each year since he was drafted.

2) If the Steelers do not make the playoffs for a third straight season, do you think Mike Tomlin could be on the hot seat?

My gut instinct would say no, just based on the history the franchise has with keeping coaches. Bill Cowher received a contract extension after 3 straight non-playoff seasons during his tenure so I’d be inclined to think that the Rooneys wouldn’t part ways with Tomlin if the 2014 Steelers weren’t as successful as they’re hoping to be. That being said, I do think it would depend on the manner in which they failed, if they do fail this season, on if Tomlin’s seat gets a bit warmer than it has been.

3) Can LeVeon Bell be the reliable running back the Steelers have been searching for the last few years?

I think he definitely has all the makings of being the running back the Steelers have been looking for. The combination of Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount should be phenomenal, aside from the struggles we’ve seen out of Blount so far in preseason. Bell should be able to capitalize off of that bright future the offensive line has and have himself quite a career in Pittsburgh.

4) Which is the strongest and which is the weakest spot on the current roster of the Steelers?

Even though I love the linebackers, defensive line, and offensive line this year I feel like as long as Ben Roethlisberger is under center he’s always the strongest on the team. If we have a good season, it will be because of him. The weakest spot is the secondary. While they got younger at safety upgrading from Ryan Clark to Mike Mitchell, the corners definitely weren’t upgraded from last season to this.

5) What will you be watching for in the preseason game between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia?

I’ll be looking to see how our defense, that has gotten a lot faster with the addition of Ryan Shazier, can match up against the Eagles’ up-tempo offense. Seems like it will be Speed vs. Speed and should be fun to watch when the starters are still in the game.
