Philadelphia Eagles cut Alejandro Villanueva today. It was a long shot for him to make the team but it was a “feel-good” story while it lasted. And he was a fan favorite, he had a lot of people pulling for him. He made great strides since he reported to the team. But having been out of the game as long as he had, there was just too much for him to learn. It’s a sad day as I was hoping he could make the team.
At 6′ 9″ he may get another look from another team. That is pure speculation but how many defensive backs are there that stand that tall? He isn’t sure if he’ll try for another team now or rejoin the military. But to be fair, it’s too soon for him to make any decisions. He needs a little time to recover.
My question is, why wouldn’t they keep him on the practice squad? If he is as good as the coaches say, surely he needs a little more time to develop. It is a sad day for many Eagles fans, myself included.
Among Villanueva, 13 others were cut today. They need to cut one more by Tuesday to get the roster down to 75. Here are the other players cut according to National Football Post.
Wide receiver B.J. Cunningham, tight end Blake Annen, offensive tackle Michael Bamiro, offensive lineman Karim Barton, wide receiver Kadron Boone, offensive lineman Donald Hawkins, tight end Emil Igwenagu, linebacker Jake Knott, safety Daytawion Lowe, defensive end Frances Mays, safety Davon Morgan, kicker Carey Spear.
