Should Philadelphia Eagles Pursue Michael Sam?

The Philadelphia Eagles defense is weak and do not have a bonafide pass-rusher. Should the Philadelphia Eagles pursue Michael Sam? The St. Louis Rams the linebacker today to trim their roster to the required number by the deadline at 4:00 PM. During the preseason Sam was involved in 77 pass-rush snaps. He recorded three quarterback sacks, two quarterback hits, and four hurries. He put pressure on the quarterback once every 8.5 snaps.

That’s a far cry better than Philadelphia Eagles first round draft pick Marcus Smith, II. Smith has been a disappointment all preseason and has failed to perform up to the level Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has expected of him. Here’s what Kelly said of Smith just last week.

If you’re going to play that many plays [the second-highest total on defense], we’re going to need more production out of you.

With Sam’s speed, his drive and quickness he sure couldn’t hurt the defensive line. Let’s say Sam comes into the Eagles organization as a player needing to develop. He would need time to transition to a 3-4 defense. That could be a challenge but I ask again, he couldn’t possibly be worse than our current pass-rushing project, Smith.

So let’s bring Sam on the team. He’s shown he has quickness. The Eagles need to put pressure on the quarterback. With the current roster and Smith being such a disappointment, they need more. Michael Sam could be the answer.
