Philadelphia Eagles And Playoff Hopes Leave Lincoln Financial Field

On December 14, 2014, the Philadelphia Eagles played their last home game of the NFL Season.    This was the year that seemed to give hope to something more than this, but in a season with backups on offensive line, inside linebacker, and finally quarterback, the season that seemed to offer so much more has come crashing down on the Eagles fans once again.   In a season where they were unbeatable at home, they lost their last two home games of the  season.   The Philadelphia Eagles, and the playoff hopes for something better this year, leave Lincoln Financial Field.

Now this is not to say the Eagles are mathematically eliminated.  They are not.  They face division rivals in Washington and then the New York Giants on the road to round out their season.  But in the NFC, a team with an 11-5 record risks missing the playoffs, and a 10-6 team certainly will not make the playoffs, the Eagles are barely alive for any post season play.

Their loss tonight places them behind the Dallas Cowboys at one game with two games left to play.   Even if the Eagles win out, they may not make post season.  That is thanks to the fact that they’ve lost to virtually every NFC wildcard team they may be competing against for that post season slot.

If they do go 11-5, they must finish a game better than either 10-4 Seattle, Detroit or Green Bay.  To do that, they have to finish out 2-0 and one of those teams must finish out 0-2.

Or, they can hope that Dallas loses a game.   But to take advantage of that, the Eagles have to win out for the rest of the season.   The team, which was once inches from perfection, now seems to be in a tail spin.   With post -season once clearly in our sights, I defy any fan to admit they are not beginning to look past the playoffs and towards the draft.   And I am just as confident that Eagles fans know what we need in that draft:  defensive backs, quarterback, linebackers, offensive linemen.

  • The Dallas loss was more than a loss.  It was a blow to the Eagles future.   Now the Eagles can win each and every day until the end of the calendar year and never make the post season.    Now the team that fought through so much adversity had two key and important games at home to opponents they had all the motivation and skill to defeat and they lost to each.

In a league of winning is everything, the Philadelphia Eagles showed that despite a good group of 53 players, they did not have enough to answer the bell.  So now, they must pack their bags and their dreams of post season success.    With any luck, the Eagles will get back into this.

But it is no longer a matter of skill.   They had their chance.  They failed.  So now the Philadelphia Eagles must go to Washington DC and to New York City and hope to find success there.  Perhaps even hopes for the playoffs too.

If they don’t, their season virtually ended today at Lincoln Financial Field.
