Philadelphia Eagles Taking Nick Foles For Granted

As many football fans may know, finding a franchise quarterback in today’s NFL is no easy task. For every one Andrew Lucks there are four RGIIIs and five Chad Hennes.

For every player that will turn your franchise around, there are many players that you might be able to get by on and players that simply aren’t fit for the NFL.

In today’s game, when it comes to finding a franchise quarterback, not even half the NFL has their franchise guy or player that they dont have questions about.

Thankfully, while the Philadelphia Eagles may not realize it, they already have their in Nick Foles. Believe it or not, Foles is the guy.

We’ve all heard it, 27 and two. That was the season that Foles had in 2013. While that was probably a fluke and will never happen again, that doesn’t mean he can’t lead this team to a championship.

Foles has a 16-4 regular season record over the past two years, and had the Eagles in a solid position to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season. There aren’t many quarterbacks in the NFL who are able to do that.

That’s because only the franchise quarterbacks are able to do that.

In this year’s post season, the Packers, Patriots, Colts, Broncos, Panthers, Seahawks, and Bengals all returned for a second consecutive year and for all of those teams, you could make the case that they have found their franchise guy.

It’s hard not to wonder where the Eagles would have been had Nick Foles not gone down in week nine against the Houston Texans. The Eagles quarterback finished his injury shortened season with 2,163 yards, 13 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and a 6-2 record, three of which were come from behind victories.

All of this happened at a time in the season in which the offensive line was in bad shape with, at times, as many as four starters out of the lineup. According to Pro Football Focus(subscription required), Foles was the most hit quarterback this season weeks one through ten.

A reunion between head coach Chip Kelly and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota would be nice, but accept it now Philadelphia, its not going to happen.

The Eagles had the 28th ranked defense in the NFL last season giving up the most explosive plays. If you can find a quarterback that can play defense as well, then you might have found your guy, but until then, trading away draft picks in order to draft one player in the ultimate team sport, just isn’t logical.

Aside from the 49ers game this season, in two of Foles’ last three losses, he left the field with less than 5:00 remaining with his defense having a lead.

It was the Eagles defense who gave up a big play in the final two minutes against the Cardinals, it was the Eagles special teams who gave the Saints good field position in the playoff game, and it was the coaching staff who couldn’t seem to call the right play on 4th and goal against the Cardinals and 49ers.

Foles gives his teams a chance to win, and thats all you can ask for from your quarterback. While the quarterback does take a lot of the criticism, the NFL is still a team game.

I mean this when I say this Eagles Nation. As a Rams fan first, Eagles fan second, I would take Nick Foles in a Rams uniform in a second. I witnessed the Rams’ great offense in the early 2000’s lead by Kurt Warner, only for them to throw him away for Marc Bulger.

The Rams haven’t won a playoff game since 2004, and have been looking for their franchise guy ever since.

I witnessed an era in which Jamie Martin, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Chris Chandler, Kyle Boller, Keith Null, Gus Frerotte, Brock Berlin…and many many more very bad names

When Foles has a pocket to throw from, he has proven that he is a top ten quarterback. Thats something you can’t say for a quarterback who has yet to play a snap in the NFL.

In a league in which over 50% of teams are looking for their franchise quarterback, dont throw yours under the bus Philadelphia. You had Donovan McNabb, and now you have Nick Foles, dont take having a franchise quarterback for granted.
