It’s clear that the Philadelphia Eagles biggest need heading into the 2015 season is a cornerback. The starting duo of Eagles cornerbacks Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher just hasn’t worked out. Williams is a decent number two cornerback at best. Fletcher was by far the worst cornerback in the league last season, luckily for Philadelphia, he’s an unrestricted free agent and should not be re-signed unless he’s coming back as fifth or sixth player on their depth chart.

The Birds have to address this gigantic need in a multitude of ways this off-season. They should add help in both free agency and in the draft. In terms of the draft, this year’s cornerback class is solid as a whole and although there are some intriguing names at the top of the draft board, there are some lesser known prospects that the Eagles and their fans should be paying close attention too.

One of those players is Western Kentucky cornerback Cam Thomas. A native of New Jersey, Thomas brings the size, skill and athleticism that the Eagles should be looking to add to their secondary. At 6-2, 195 lbs., he’s built well for the position, with the long arms that Philadelphia loves on the defensive side of the ball. Thomas plays with an edge and level of toughness on the field which fans would really appreciate.

College Career

Cam Thomas started his college career at Milford Academy where he started all 13 games at cornerback but spent some time at free safety as well. Thomas transferred to Western Kentucky in 2010 and had to sit out his first season there due to NCAA rules. Thomas played his first snap for the Hilltoppers in 2011 and never looked back. He finished the 2011 season with two starts at cornerback and 26 total tackles. In 2012, Thomas became one of the best players in the secondary, starting 7 games and led the team in pass breakups with 7 and second on the team in interceptions with 3. Thomas also finished sixth on the team in total tackles with 43.

In 2013, Thomas made a name for himself. He started all 12 games for the Hilltoppers and was elected a team captain as well. Thomas led the Sun Belt Conference in passes defended with 15 and interceptions with 5. He also finished the year with 41 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack and a fumble recovery. Thomas was named a team captain once again in 2014 and finished the season with 45 total tackles, 2 interceptions and 5 passes defended. He was also invited to the East-West Shrine Game to showcase his skills in front of many NFL scouts and coaches.
