Eagles Fantasy Football Season Wrap-up

facebooktwitterreddit

The 2015 fantasy football season is over, and with it all the ups and downs from the Philadelphia Eagles players you might have had.

No doubt you’ll want to take a break from fantasy football for a while, but here’s a look at how some of the Eagles players finished within their position groups in terms of fantasy stats. For comparison, here is my prediction for the season, which includes the ESPN season projections.

QB Sam Bradford

2015 ESPN Projection: 3,888 passing yards, 27 TDs, 12 INTs (253.7 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 3,725 passing yards, 19 TDs, 14 INTs (194 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 24th

In terms of a real perspective, Bradford had a pretty good year, showing lots of improvement as the season progressed. However, in terms of fantasy, he was never a reliable quarterback, committing too many turnovers and not throwing enough touchdowns or yards to warrant owning. If the Eagles hold onto him, he should have a better season next year, but at this point, who knows.

RB DeMarco Murray

2015 ESPN Projection: 1,061 rushing yards, 10 TDs (188.6 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 702 rushing yards, 6 TDs, 322 receiving yards, TD (129 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 18th

It was another terrible year for fantasy football running backs as multiple first round picks suffered season-ending injuries and others were complete busts. If you took Murray as your RB1 then I’m sorry, because he even underperformed compared to ESPN’s already low projections. He still finished the year with over 1,000 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns, but overall, his season was much more frustrating than positive. Hopefully a coaching change will help his value in next year’s draft.

More from Inside the Iggles

RB Ryan Mathews

2015 ESPN Projection: 913 rushing yards, 5 TDs (135.7 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 539 rushing yards, 6 TDs, 146 receiving yards, TD (95 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 34th

Mathews also underperformed compared to his projection as the Eagles’ run offense ultimately fell flat on too many occasions. A lack of injuries to Murray also limited Mathews’ chances to rack up the carries, and thus he finished as just an RB4. If he got more carries, he almost certainly would’ve had a more productive season than Murray.

RB Darren Sproles

2015 ESPN Projection: 224 rushing yards, 308 receiving yards, 2 total TDs (65.9 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 317 rushing yards, 388 receiving yards, 6 total TDs (94 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 35th

Sproles is the first Eagles player to actually beat his projections here, finishing just one slot behind Mathews on the position ranking list. He finished with six total touchdowns thanks to a pair of punt returning scores, but disappointed a bit in terms of receiving, scoring just once through the air. His status on the Eagles is a little up in the air for next year, but with his age, I don’t expect his value to ever increase.

WR Jordan Matthews

2015 ESPN Projection: 990 receiving yards, 7 TDs (141 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 997 receiving yards, 8 TDs (139 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 20th

I believed that Matthews would have a breakout year, and while he topped his statistics from his rookie season, a lot of his production was in garbage time or in Week 17, a game that didn’t really matter. He picked it up in the final three games of the season, but struggled with drops a lot all the way through the year. ESPN almost guessed his projection exactly though, and he finished at the bottom of the WR2 slot.

WR Nelson Agholor

2015 ESPN Projection: 899 receiving yards, 6 TDs (126.1 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 283 receiving yards, TD (29 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 105th

Agholor was a huge disappointment no matter how you spin it. He finished with nearly 100 fantasy points fewer than projected, but only missed four games. He was largely ineffective despite playing a lot of the snaps for the team. He surpassed four fantasy points on just one occasion. It will be tough to trust him next year no matter what the situation, as he didn’t even seem to improve as the season went on.

WR Josh Huff

2015 ESPN Projection: 157 receiving yards, 1 TD (24 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 312 receiving yards, 3 TDs (43 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 89th

For comparison, Riley Cooper finished one slot below Cooper in the position ranking with nearly identical stats. As expected, Huff finished with better stats than both 2014 and his 2015 projection, but he still was a disappointment to some people. He was never really a viable fantasy option due to the Eagles spreading the ball around a lot. But, with Cooper hopefully gone next year, he has a chance to see some greater production.

TE Zach Ertz

2015 ESPN Projection: 658 receiving yards, 5 TDs (94.5 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 853 receiving yards, 2 TDs (89 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 10th

Ertz’s last four weeks of the season completely saved his season fantasy performance, so if you picked him up at the end, he probably seemed like a superstar. However, most of the season was a disappointment as he only found the end zone twice, even less frequent than backup Brent Celek. Ertz did manage to finish just a few points below his overall ESPN projection, although he had way more yards and way fewer scores than expected. He finished just on the edge of the TE1 role. Whoever coaches the Eagles next season would be smart to utilize him as much as possible.

K Cody Parkey

2015 ESPN Projection: 27/30 FGs, 45/45 XPs (134 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 3/4 FGs, 7/7 XPs (16 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 37th

Whoops! Well, if you drafted Parkey, I hope it didn’t take long for you to cut him, as he only made it through three games before ending up on injured reserve. He will have the opportunity to win the starting job next year.

K Caleb Sturgis

2015 ESPN Projection: N/A
2015 Results: 18/22 FGs, 35/37 XPs (93 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 25th

Sturgis got a bit of a slow start after not getting signed until Week 4, but he still finished with pretty low statistics. It was his best year of his three-year career in terms of field goal percentage, but that might have been a product of it also being the fewest field goals he’s attempted in a season. I expect him to battle Parkey for the starting job next year.

Eagles D/ST

2015 ESPN Projection: 49 sacks, 12 INTs, 14 FRs, 4 TDs, 367 PA (114 fantasy points)
2015 Results: 37 sacks, 15 INTs, 11 FRs, 6 TDs, 430 PA (91 fantasy points)
ESPN Position Rank: 16th

After a very good start, the Eagles defense had a brutal second half of the season, finishing with a lot of negative-point outings. The special teams and defense didn’t add as many touchdowns as last year’s 11, and they gave up tons of points on a regular basis. Overall, they finished right in the middle of the pack.
