Jason Peters could make a position change.

Left tackle Jason Peters signed a one-year contract extension Wednesday, which will keep him with the Philadelphia Eagles through 2019 and likely until he retires.

While Peters is currently locked in as the team’s anchor at tackle, it’s possible the 35-year-old veteran could make the switch to guard before he hangs up the cleats. At least according to Doug Pederson.

While speaking to the media Wednesday (which you can watch here), the Eagles head coach hinted at the possibility of moving Peters to guard at some point in the not too distant future.

"I think so. With his size, his athleticism, strength, the way he comes off the ball, would be a great asset anywhere along the offensive line. Guard could be a potential spot later down the road."

Peters is more than capable of making the transition to the interior. Guards typically don’t need to be as quick as tackles, so making the position change should be manageable for Peters as he gets older. Still, though, Peters is an extremely athletic lineman and could probably make as much of an impact at guard as he has at tackle.

It just so happens that there could be an opening at left guard in a couple years, too. Center Jason Kelce is no long-term guarantee to be on the team. It’s even been rumored that the Eagles could trade Kelce as soon as this season. If the Eagles move on from Kelce, he would likely be replaced by Isaac Seumalo, who has been taking first-team reps at both guard center during minicamp. This would allow Peters to take over at guard as Seumalo fills in at center.

At the end of the day, Jason Peters is going to finish his career with the Eagles. Whether he retires as a tackle or guard, Philadelphia is retaining one of their most valuable players on the offensive line for an extra year, which is a win for the Eagles.
