Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz felt emotional when he found out his college teammate, Andrew Luck was retiring.

On Saturday night, the NFL world was left with perhaps the most shocking news in quite some time. Typically, the third week of the NFL Preseason doesn’t really generate monster news. But this time around, nobody expected such a shocking turn of events in Indianapolis.

Colts star quarterback, Andrew Luck has decided to call it quits after suffering another injury this offseason. At just 29-years-old, the Colts passer decided that the physical and emotional pain was beginning to take too much of a toll on his mind and body.

At this point, Luck no longer feels the same joy towards football as he once did. And despite being a proven, top-ten quarterback in the league, the now-former Colts QB will call it a career early, which left Luck’s fanbase, teammates, coaches, and even former teammates shocked.

Philadelphia Eagles star tight end Zach Ertz was just as surprised as anybody on Saturday night. According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, the Eagles tight end was just sitting at home watching some college football when the breaking news came up on the screen.

Being that Ertz and Luck were teammates in college and remain really good friends, Ertz was feeling especially emotional over Luck’s decision to retire.

Ertz’s reaction:

“It was emotional watching it for me knowing him so personally and knowing how much he loves the game of football,” Ertz stated. “I’m proud of him, for sure. It’s not an easy decision to make, but this game is tough as it is, and it’s impossible to play if you’re 50 percent in and 50 percent out. It’s not good for yourself; it’s not good for your team.”

While Ertz, along with a lot of others believe that Luck still has so much to offer to the NFL, he understands the decision and why it came about. Some in Indianapolis weren’t happy with the outcome — but at the end of the day, it’s hard to be upset towards the veteran quarterback for his decision. Maybe one day, Luck will return to the game. For now, though, he’s onto life after sports.
