The Eagles added 10 new player this off season and really did a good job filling holes in their roster through free agency, especially on defense. Now that the Eagles are likely done making moves through free agency, it’s time to review the signings, and the trade, the Eagles made this off season and what each players projected role will be for the Eagles next season.

Kenny Phillips, Safety: Kenny Phillips was once one of the top safeties in the league, but now he is a question mark coming off of a knee injury that sidelined him for most of last season. Heading into mini-camps and OTAs, Phillips, if he remains healthy, is the front runner to be one of the Eagles starting safeties next season. Even though he is coming off of an injury, Phillips is the most proven safety on the Eagles roster and he should be one of the starting safeties for the Eagles come week 1.

Patrick Chung, Safety: Chung had a great 2010 campaign, but missed parts of 2011 due to injury and end last season on bad terms with the Patriots last season. Chung has shown he has the ability to be an impactful starter, but he needs to come out and prove to Chip Kelly and Billy Davis that he can still be a solid starter. Like Phillips, Chung is the other front runner for one of the Eagles starting safety jobs heading into Week 1, but he will have to prove to the coaching staff that he deserves it.

Bradley Fletcher, Cornerback: Fletcher, a lot like Chung, had a solid 2010, but got injured in 2011 and lost his starting job to the very talented Janoris Jenkins. Fletcher is one of the better tackling safeties at the cornerback position and as the roster is currently constituted, he is the favorite to be the Eagles number 2 starter heading into week 1, but if the Eagles do decide to select Dee Milliner with the 4th overall pick, Fletcher would probably become a sub-package corner.

Cary Williams, Cornerback: Cary Williams was the number one corner for the Super Bowl Champion Ravens last season and he played a big role in their success in the post season. Williams is a feisty, physical corner who should bring stability to the Eagles secondary. Barring the Eagles trading for Revis in the coming weeks, Williams will most likely be the Eagles number 1 corner Week 1.

Isaac Sopoaga, Nose Tackle: Sopoaga has been the center piece of the 49ers 3-4 defense for many years now and the Eagles are looking for him to do the same in Philly. Sopoaga isn’t a real threat as a pass rusher, but he does posses the ability to crash the pocket and be a force in the run game. Sopoaga will be the Eagles day 1 starting NT and may be asked to mentor a nose tackle that the Eagles draft, if they decide to do so.

Connor Barwin, Outside Linebacker: Barwin had a monster season in 2011, recording 11.5 sacks, but had a mediocre 2012 campaign, as he only recorded 3 sacks. The reason for this is because Barwin was asked to drop into coverage a lot more last season, which was different from his role in 2010, where he was primarily a pass rusher rushing from the open side. Barwin brings a lot of versatility to the Eagles new 3-4 defense and will most likely be there week 1 starter.

James Casey, Tight End: Casey is a very versatile tight end who has the ability to play fullback as well. Casey has good athleticism and speed and will be a very utilized weapon this season. Casey can be an effective pass blocker as well as catch balls, which is why Chip Kelly wanted him apart of his team. Casey may be number 2 on the Eagles depth chart, but Casey will be on the field a lot next season.

Jason Phillips, Linebacker: Phillips does not have much of reputation around the league, but he will enter camp competing for a back role as either a ILB or OLB, but his main contribution will be on special teams. Don’t expect much of an impact from Phillips this season, but he will receive the chance to play a bit.

Donnie Jones, Punter: There is not much to say. Jones has been a Pro Bowler before and will be the Eagles punter come week 1.

Arrelious Benn, Wide Reciever: Ben doesn’t have much of a history in the NFL because of a history with injury. Benn will have a chance to be a the third receiver, but he would have to beat out Jason Avant, but he has a good chance to be a solid situation receiver.

After the hiring of Billy Davis and the signings of players like Connor Barwin and Isaac Sopoaga, it became clear that the Eagles are going to run some variation of the 3-4 defense. This raised many questions about personnel, but the main question revolved around where players like Trent Cole and Brandon Graham will play in the Eagles new defense.

Earlier this off season, Graham said he was preparing to make the switch to become an OLB in the 3-4 defense by dropping his weight to 260 lbs ( he is currently 270 lbs). As of right now, Graham still doesn’t know what position he will play when the season starts, but what he does know is that he will play hard no matter what position he plays.

“I don’t know,” Graham said is regards to his position change. “There’s been a lot of talk around a lot of things, but I don’t really know where they want to put me at. All I know is wherever they put me, I’m going to go full out.”

Along with being asked about playing OLB, the other questions were about his size. Under Coach Reid, the Eagles drafted smaller players who could use their speed to get to the passer in a 4-3 defense, but Coach Kelly has shown, through free agency, that he likes bigger stronger guys, who can out muscle their opponents. Graham feels that as long as he makes plays, he’ll be on the field.

“If I make plays and I do what I’m supposed to do, I think all that will probably change,” he said. “I’ve been talked about all the time, me being under-sized, but I’m here today. All I can do is go hard, and everything else will pretty much take care of itself.”

Chip Kelly has been very “hush, hush” about what his plans are for the up coming season and the players are keeping quiet too. But what seems to be the key in to make Chip Kelly’s team is to play hard all the time and make some plays, something players last year had trouble doing.

Heading into the off season, the Eagles had tons of holes up and down the roster, and it seemed inevitably that the Eagles would need to use the draft to feel many of these holes, especially on defense. That all changed after the Eagles acquired ten players during free agency and did a great job off filling most off their holes with mid-tier players, on short, team friendly contracts. By doing so, the Eagles have freed up what they can do in the draft this year, especially in the early rounds. With that being said, the Eagles can still upgrade their team at certain positions and give themselves great depth heading into a long, grueling season. Here are 3 positions the Eagles should look to improve through the draft.

1. Safety: Last season, the Eagles had one of the worst secondaries in the league and the Eagles safeties were a huge part of the problem. Kurt Coleman and Nate Allen were at the top of the list in missed tackles and they were prone to giving up the big play. This off season the Eagles brought in two new safeties, Kenny Phillips and Pat Chung, who, only a few years ago, were one of the top safeties in the league. But heading into this season, both Phillips and Chung have questions regarding health and the ability to return to their Pro Bowl level. The Eagles need to take the next step in upgrading at the safety position by adding another one through the draft. This year’s draft has one of the best safety class in a while and it is a prime opportunity for the Eagles to continue to upgrade this position. I currently have the Eagles selecting UGA’s safety Shawn Williams in the third round. Another reason the Eagles may what to draft a safety is because, even if Kenny Phillips returns to his Pro Bowl form, Phillips is on a one year deal an could walk at the end of the season and would re-open a huge hole in the Eagles secondary.

2. Nose Tackle: The Eagles are transforming their defense from a small 4-3 to a large, physical 3-4 and need some more plug-and-play players on their defensive line. The Eagles signed NT Isaac Sopoaga this off season to be their starting NT for 2013, but the Eagles need to add a big, young NT who can develop under Sopoaga and eventually take over in a year or two. Right now the Eagles backup NT is Antonio Dixon and, to be honest, Dixon isn’t that great. At the moment I have the Eagles taking Johnathan Hankins, out of Ohio St., in the 2nd round, but i can also see the Eagles taking someone like Star Lotulelei in the first round because Lotulelei can play NT but also can play defensive end in a 3-4 front and Coach Chip Kelly likes to have versatile players.

3. Cornerback Heading into the 2011-2012 and the 2012-2013 seasons, the Eagles cornerbacks were supposed to be one of the best in the league. Either they really under performed or they’re just not the same corners they once were, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha both stunk last year and, to make a long story short, they will not be returning to the Eagles this season. This off season the Eagles added Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher, two corners the Eagles hope can be impact starters next season. I have no doubt Cary Williams can be a solid starter, but Bradley Fletcher is a question mark because of his injury history and his lack of starting experience. The Eagles can get rid of that question mark by selecting a player like Dee Milliner in the first round, the player I currently have the Eagles selecting with the first pick. The Eagles cornerbacks were terrible last year and the Eagles management has done a good job thus far of trying to fix it, but the Eagles shouldn’t stop yet and they should look to add someone like Milliner to put the finishing touches on replenishing the cornerback position.
