This weekend was a monumental on for Chip Kelly because it was his first NFL Draft and he did a great job. Every coach around the league preaches to his fan base that he will “stick to his board”, but we know that this is not always true. Chip Kelly, on the other hand, was telling the truth and he stuck to his board through all seven rounds and because he did, the Eagles were able to get great value in everyone of their picks.

Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma: Lane Johnson was only the third best offensive tackle, but he was the third best player in the draft. Johnson was the most athletic tackle in the draft and he has had expirience in a up-tempo offense because that’s the scheme that was run at Oklahoma. With the addition of Johnson, the Eagles offensive line, when everyone is healthy, have one off the best offensive lines in football. Grade: A

Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford: The selection of Zach Ertz is my favorite selection that the Eagles made because of what he bring to the Eagles offense. Ertz allows the Eagles to put three talented tight ends on the field at once and create matchup nightmares. Ertz was a great selection by Chip Kelly and, like Lane Johnson, Ertz fits what Kelly will do. Grade: A

Bennie Logan, DT, LSU: Logan fills a need for the Eagles and gives them another weapon on their defensive line. Logan is very good against the run and the best part about this pick is that Logan wont be leaned on to start, but instead will rotate with Sopoaga as the Eagles nose tackle. Grade: B

Matt Barkley, QB, USC: This is the most intriguing pick that Chip Kelly made in the draft. Barkley isn’t a speed demon at quarterback, yet Chip Kelly valued him to the point where he jumped up in the fourth round to get him before the Chiefs or the Raiders could get him. Last year, Barkley would’ve been a top-10 pick and the Eagles got him in the 4th round. Grade: B+

Earl Wolff, S, NC State: The Eagles rebuilt their secondary this off-season and added two safeties, when healthy, that can play at a Pro Bowl level. Wolff gives the Eagles a young, developmental safety that is a tempo setter. According to reports,Wolff had 2nd round talent, but fell do to character issues. Grade B

Joe Kruger, DE, Utah: To be honest, I thought Kruger was a early day 3 pick, not a 7th rounder. Joe Kruger, brother of Paul, is big and fast and gives the Eagles a 3-4 end who could mix into the defensive line rotation soon. Grade: B+

Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon St: Poyer was potentially a fifth round pick that fell into the Eagles lap in the 7th round. Poyer gives the Eagles a fast corner with good size that they can develop in their system. Grade: B+

David King, DE, Oklahoma: King gives the Eagles another big defensive end that they can develop in their system. King wont make any immediate impact, but with a compensatory pick in the 7th round, why not give a guy with the physical makeup to be a good player a chance. Grade: B-

The speculation throughout the draft is that Chip Kelly would select his quarterback of the future and through 3 rounds he hadn’t. On day three, the Eagles started with a bang by trading up to the first overall selection to draft the USC signal caller. It is surprise because he doesn’t seem like the greatest scheme fit, but it shows that Chip Kelly is sticking to his board. Shortly after the selection, Kelly said Matt Barkley was rated as a top 50 prospect by the Eagles.

“There was no better value for us to open up with than to take Matt,” Kelly said. “If you go to the film he’s had an outstanding career and we’re excited to have him.”

So there it is, Matt Barkley is the future of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Are you happy Eagles fans, sound of in the comments below.

In Monday’s sit down with the press, Eagles GM stated that the highly rated defensive tackle was cleared by the Eagles medical staff.

“Our medical staff has checked out Star Lotulelei,” Roseman explained. “Star passed our tests, in terms of the heart condition, and he’s been cleared.”

Lotulelei was held out of February’s combine with a heart condition, but was later cleared to play by his own doctors and latter by the Eagles.

The 6’2″-311 lbs. prospect from Utah is widely regarded as the top nose tackle in the draft and he will likely be a top 10 pick, potentially top 5. The Eagles are definitely in the market for a young nose tackle, but is Lotulelei a real option for the Birds at 4?

In the same press conference, Roseman hinted at the fact that the Eagles are indeed looking to upgrade their front line.

“You want to build along the lines in the NFL,” Roseman explained. “And you talk about the offensive linemen and defensive linemen in this year’s draft—and it may not be the flashiest thing for your fanbase, but it’s exciting for your franchise to see that kind of talent on the board.”

Based on Roseman’s statement alone, my gut tells me that there are four guys the Eagles really like in this years draft: Luke Joeckel, Sharrif Floyd, Eric Fisher, and Star Lotulelei.

According to reports, the Eagles have privately worked out all of these prospects and they’re all in the discussion as potentials at 4. I don’t think the Eagles will have a chance to select Joeckel or Floyd and that the decisions will come down to Fisher and Floyd. Who will it be, I have know idea and that’s the fun part about this process.
