Eagles fans are understandably excited about Chip Kelly’s arrival to the city as he looks to clean up the fantastic mess left by Andy Reid before the team’s former head coached departed for redder pastures in Kansas City. Kelly, a college coach who has experienced a great deal of success, is a gifted football mind who has been billed as the man that can finally get the city’s franchise its first Lombardi Trophy.

So perhaps it’s not surprising that when Kelly showed up to WIP’s Wing Bowl 21 on Friday morning that the fans were more than enthusiastic to greet their new head coach.

While I think it’s cool that Kelly showed up for the event (he’s obviously looking for some good will from the peanut gallery during the early parts of his tenure), when asked to address the crowd, well, Kelly fell kind of flat. He paused briefly and belted out a somewhat awkward response. But it didn’t matter. The drunken crowd was feeling the positive vibes and let out a raucous cheer for the newly minted head coach. Check it out below.

Derrick Gunn dropped another bomb yesterday, as he reported that there will be a Philadelphia Eagle that will not return next season, and the Eagles are unaware of it. He would not give up the name(as he ‘promised the player he wouldn’t'), but there is a ton of speculation that the player is Eagles Offensive Tackle Jon Runyan.

Runyan has been the Eagles Iron Man, and has not missed a game since he signed his big free agent contract in 2000. That streak is currently third in the NFL, but could be broken if this is true.

After the Saints game Runyan was asked about hanging it up, and he said that he will retire when ‘the pain out weighs the money’. He has been dealing with an extreme amount of pain this year, because of his fractured tail bone. He also finished the season against Buffalo with a nasty concussion. Maybe the pain is starting to out weight the money.

Runyan was asked about retirement again during his weekly show “Unnecessary Roughness” on 610 WIP, by host Anthony Gargano(Cuz). There was a long pause and a sigh, but Big Jon did say that he would want to be back next season. That long pause gave me the impression that he is at least contemplating retirement, and said he wants to return to not create a story in the media about it.

Gargano’s voice seemed to be of deep disappointment as he was almost begging Jon to stick around another year. He also went on to blame ‘the curse of the cuz’(every co-host he has is gone the next year) as to why Runyan would do this.

There are some factors to which he could retire, and that is that he has built his dream home in New Jersey, and is ready to just spend more time with his family.

On the other hand he still has two years remaining on his contract, and that big house probably comes with some big bills to pay.

One thing that I have noticed this year, is that Jon’s face has been all over the place. He has gotten commercial endorsements for Wawa and Chevy Trucks. He has done his own radio show on WIP, and he has been making a ton of media appearances. He seems to be setting himself for a career in broadcasting of some sort, after his NFL days are up.

Runyan has been the most consistent Eagle over the last seven years, and has been known to be one of the toughest players in the NFL. He is not just a great player, but he is also one of the more vocal leaders on this team. If he were to retire, he would be missed no matter who stepped in his place.

I really hope that this is not the case, and that Jon comes back for 1-2 more years.
