CHRISTIAN JONES – Florida State
Third Round, Pick no.87

Chip Kelly values versatility and Christian Jones is one of the most versatile players of the 2014 NFL Draft. At 6′ 3″ and 240 lbs, Jones has the size to play outside linebacker in either 4-3 or 3-4 schemes, or even 4-3 defensive end.

Jones’ versatility is not limited in the positions he can play. He is a player that does well against the run, in coverage or as a pass rusher.

He is very fast and agile and uses his speed to gain the advantage over the blockers when going after the quarterbacks. When tackles try to cheat and gain a step on him, he shows good recognition to use his strength more than his speed and push them off or drive towards the inside.

Jones sets the edge nicely, but he will have to bulk up to avoid being overpowered by the NFL offensive tackles. He tracks and chases down the ball carrier from sideline to sideline. Jones is also a good tackler, but needs to learn to play with lower pad level.

Jones is able to cover big tight ends thanks to his long arms and speed-strength combination. He moves smoothly, but his footwork gets messy sometimes.

The Eagles could use Jones as 3-4 outside linebacker. It’s the position that suits him more because of his frame and great acceleration. Not more than a situational player at this point, he needs to become stronger and focus on his technique.
