BEAU ALLEN – Wisconsin
Seventh Round, Pick no. 237

Beau Allen from University of Wisconsin is not the player you would expect the Eagles to draft. He is limited athletically and lacks versatility. The Eagles, however need to add a more traditional anchor to their defensive line if they want to take their 3-4 defense to the next level.

As a prototypical 3-4 nose tackle, Allen is a tough-nosed guy that relies more on strength than explosiveness or technique. With 54 games under his belt, he is a very experienced player. His mission is not to go after the quarterback or chase the running back. Allen is a space eater – he attracts and handles double teams, freeing up space for his teammates.

Stats are not his thing and Allen knows this well. He told the Milwaukee – Wisconsin Journal Sentinel:

“There’s nothing too sexy about a white, 330-pound nose guard from Wisconsin… You have to take pride in it. I think I did that well. I took pride in playing nose guard and keeping Chris Borland and the rest of our linebackers free. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The Eagles could use a guy his size to give Bennie Logan a breather. Kelly values versatility, but he also hates having players with identical characterisitics. Philadelphia needs an old-school nose tackle and Allen is just that.
