Philadelphia Eagles: Ranking Top 5 Deepest Positions
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports
1) Running Back
It’s really no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles deepest and most talented position is the running back group. When the team decided to trade the franchises all time leading rusher LeSean McCoy, many didn’t think they were going to be able to replace the teams best player. After a whirlwind free agency period, the team not only replaced McCoy, but improved the position as a whole.
The team signed the 2014 NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray to a 5 year 42 million dollar contract, and signed pro bowl running back Ryan Mathews to a 3 year deal as well. Murray and Mathews get to join the ageless Darren Sproles, who was a pro bowler as a return specialist and played well as a receiver and running back last season. This immensely talented trio almost never happened too, if it wasn’t for Frank Gore getting cold feet, then this awesome trio would’ve never happened.
This is the best running back group in the NFL by a wide margin. The Philadelphia Eagles kind of got away from running the ball in 2014 and it hurt the teams overall success. That will change, I can guarantee that. The team now has a plethora of weapons they can go to, and with the fast paced offense, keeping guys fresh is absolutely necessary. The combination of a fresh Murray, Mathews, and Sproles will be a nightmare for opposing defenses. This is a scary backfield and the greatest strength of this Philadelphia Eagles team.
