No. 5: Vai Sikahema
Although he’s now become a revered staple in the Philadelphia area as a longtime sports anchor, selecting Vai Sikahema here just goes to show how the cupboard has been historically bare for free agent running backs.
Used almost exclusively as a punt and kick returner throughout his career, Sikahema did at least pick up where he left off during his time with the Cardinals (plus a year as a Packer). He did a yeoman’s job in the same role for Philly, including an impressive 12.6 yards per punt return in 1992.
But, frankly, if the diminutive former amateur boxer only accomplished the following two things in his life, he’d have still been forever loved by us: knocking out Jose Canseco (summarized in this ESPN article) and this Rocky-esque touchdown return against the Giants:
