No. 3: Herschel Walker
Well, here’s one where the Cowboys get the last laugh. Not because of what the Herschel Walker did for the team, but what he brought them when they traded him (essentially three Super Bowls). To date, their trade with (fleecing of?) the Vikings remains one of the most lopsided in sports history.
A physical specimen once one of the most highly touted running backs to come out of both high school and college – and then the USFL (remember them?) – Walker’s NFL career was ultimately a letdown. Good thing he at least had Olympic bobsledding and MMA to fall back on.
However, his time with the Eagles from ’92-‘94 was at least respectable. But I vividly recall how it could have been so much more. Walker was thought to be the missing piece for a championship. However, shortly after his rival, the team’s heart and soul, Jerome Brown tragically died and, although they went 11-5 and won a playoff game for the first time in over a decade, that’s where they peaked for nearly another decade.
But don’t blame Walker. In his three years in town, he averaged scored 22 touchdowns (including one via kickoff return), pulled in over 160 receptions and cracked over 1,000 yards in a season.
