Who have been the Eagles five best players this season?
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports
Ryan Mathews, Running Back
The Philadelphia Eagles running game has been inconsistent for most of the season, but when running back Ryan Mathews touches the ball, he makes the most out of his opportunities. Mathews is averaging 5 yards a carry and looks so explosive and decisive when he has the ball in his hands. There’s times when the hole isn’t necessarily there, but Mathews jump cuts his way for positive yardage. Mathews has also been a valuable threat in the passing game as well.
Unlike his teammate DeMarco Murray, Mathews has been quick to hit the hole and make the most of every touch he gets. Mathews had 73 rushing yards on only 8 carries last Sunday. It’s becoming more and more apparent that Mathews needs more touches. Mathews has been the spark plug for what has been a stale rushing attack for most of the season. Chip Kelly would be smart to give the man that has salvaged the offense more carries and passing opportunities.
