It wasn’t long ago when this seemed like the surest unit on the team, if not the entire league. The three-headed monster of defending rushing leader DeMarco Murray, paired with 1,000-yard compiler Ryan Mathews to go along with the wily Darren Sproles were poised to wreak havoc on opposing defenses.

Then the regular season began.

Murray could never fit in the current system and has since been traded away. Mathews continues to struggle to stay on the field. And the 5’6’’ Sproles will be 33 by the time next season begins.

Rookie Kenjon Barner showed some promise when he was on the field, but with few other dynamic playmakers on the roster, a little insurance would be welcomed.

Furthermore, new coach Doug Pederson has indicated his desire to resurrect the fullback position (remember those?), a role that is currently held by default by recently-signed Ryan Mueller, a converted linebacker.
