The Philadelphia Eagles have made big moves with a little over a week until the 2016 NFL Draft.

It was tossed around earlier in the week but there wasn’t too much noise from the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cleveland Browns were shopping around their No.2 overall pick and while there had been questions as to who it might go to, Wednesday afternoon made it more clear.

The details of the deal are more in favor of the Browns than the Eagles. The Eagles received the 2016 number two overall pick and a 2017 fourth-round pick. For Cleveland, they are going to be in a better position in the upcoming years. They have the Eagles former pick, number eight overall, as well as both the third and fourth round draft pick for the 2016 NFL draft. In the next two years’ worth of draft the Browns also have the 2017 first-round pick and the 2018 second-round pick. Rumors earlier had linked the Eagles in talks with the San Diego Chargers as well for their No.3 overall pick.

  • The team had made waves earlier in the season by the team trading Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonso for some draft picks, which gave the original No.8 overall draft pick. That went right out the window with the trade involving the Browns. It was a risky move by the Eagles organization but there were reasons for the trade. According to CBS Sports 24/7, Eagles vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said the trade “By making the initial trade with Miami earlier this offseason and with this trade today with Cleveland, we feel that we have put ourselves in the best possible position to draft an impact player.”

“By making the initial trade with Miami earlier this offseason and with this trade today with Cleveland, we feel that we have put ourselves in the best possible position to draft an impact player.”

With this No.2 overall pick, there is little speculation as to what position need they will address. The Eagles are looking for a franchise quarterback and there are options that the team is going to consider. Frontrunner Jared Goff of California or Carson Wentz of North Dakota State will go to the Eagles and both have potential to be an impact player for the team. They’ve spent time and resources working with both athletes and have worked them out in separate visits. Whichever player that isn’t drafted by the Los Angeles Rams as the No.1 pick will likely go to the Eagles.

The quarterback picked by the Eagles will no necessarily take away the starting job from Sam Bradford. He recently signed a $22 million deal and that is going to be a big factor that will influence head coach Doug Pederson‘s decision to keep him as the starter. The quarterback drafted will be groomed to fit in either the number two or three spot on the roster. There is potential for growth with both athletes and if they develop enough, the draft pick might yield the franchise QB the Eagles have been searching for in the past few years.
