Eagles’ training camp: Why is the depth chart at quarterback still a discussion?
There are a ton of things to figure out during training camp for the Philadelphia Eagles, and still, the quarterback position seems to be all that people want to talk about.
Training camp is officially two days old, and there isn’t a football fan on the planet who isn’t walking around with a huge smile on his or her face. It doesn’t seem as hot outside, things we find irritating aren’t as annoying and work doesn’t seem so long. Turn on any sports show, radio show or podcast, and there isn’t much of a chance that you’re going to hear much about anything else.

The Philadelphia Eagles opened training camp yesterday, and even though there aren’t any definite answers on what they’re going to do at seemingly every position aside from quarterback and the defensive line, the quarterback position still remains one of the hottest topics. Take a look at what Bryant McFadden had to say:
We know what you’re thinking. There’s not a whole lot of new information there. The depth chart for the Eagles’ quarterbacks has been the same since what seems like April, but based on Sam Bradford and his injury history, the fact that many thought Chase Daniel had a chance to come in and beat him out for the starting job and the fact that, when the season starts, Carson Wentz is going to be dressed like most of us will be dressed on gameday, why do the questions keep coming up?
There are a few things that you might want to keep in mind:
Number one:
The offensive line is much better already. It couldn’t get much worse, but still. Bradford may not get hit as much and could complete a full 16 game season. That’s hard to believe because no one can truly remember when he’s ever done it without using Google. Even with all of that being said, this is Bradford, and you have to ask what if he goes down?
Number two and for the final time:
Daniel, not Wentz, will step on the field when and if Bradford can’t go. That’s been said. That’s been written down. We’ve heard that ad nauseam. That’s what the head coach has told us, and that’s what you should bank on (even though we all have that same gut feeling that it’s hard to believe that’s the entire story).
Number three:
From what we’re seeing, Wentz is good. Many teams in the league would probably throw him out on the field week one of 2016, but that’s not the plan here. Still, expect him to shine during the preseason against the weaker portion of each team’s roster (especially in the fourth game where much of what he’ll be facing may not have a job the following week). Expect that to be fuel for many fans wanting to see him in real games, and if Bradford gets hurt, throw out the theory that he won’t be dressing. He’ll have to at that point, as he’d actually be the backup quarterback if that were to occur.

Whatever happens, as McFadden states, the wide receiver position is a question mark as well, and regardless of who’s behind center, their success will be a result of how those guys play. We’ll all just have to wait and see how things shape up.
