Drafting for need or best player available: What is the better strategy?
Taking “best player available” is the suggested strategy for the NFL Draft, but teams draft for need more than the narrative says.
You always hear it during the NFL Draft. Take the best player available on the board. It doesn’t matter if the team has a need for that position or not. Drafting for need will cost general managers their job.
That is the narrative, at least. But is it really the correct way to draft? And do teams really follow this formula when preparing for their selections?
