They must watch a lot of Mountaineers football at the NovaCare Complex.

Someone in the Philadelphia Eagles brass or someone with ties to the team must be an alum or very in tune with what’s going on with the West Virginia Mountaineers. Last season, in the fifth round, Philly went with running back Wendell Smallwood, making him the 153rd-overall pick. The jury’s still out on that selection, but someone must have liked what they saw. 12 months later, this team has added two more Mountaineers to the fold, and the hope is they may be a part of Philadelphia’s quest to bring this team back to prominence.

As mentioned, the 2017 NFL Draft would see the Eagles add not one, but two more Mountaineers to the roster. At pick 99, Philly made Rasul Douglas the 99th-overall pick and their second cornerback taken. Then, after trading down in the fifth round, the Eagles addressed the offensive side of the ball with their selection of wide receiver Shelton Gibson.

Immediate reaction:

Is anyone else besides us excited? Nothing says wide receiver highlights like long touchdown passes, circus catches, helmets popping off and post-catch celebrations. You have to love the energy of this young man, something the Eagles offense could use, but more importantly, there’s no mention of team distractions, off-field issues and arrests. All this kid does is play his heart out, and if things work out, that Carson Wentz-Shelton Benjamin selection could make Lincoln Financial Field a noisy place to visit for years to come.

NFL.com described Gibson as another Corey Coleman. WalterFootball.com listed him as the tenth-best receiver in this draft class, so picking him up in the fifth round might mean, when it’s all said and done, we could look back and realize this was one of the steals of this draft.
