Philadelphia Eagles: 5 Reasons to be re-energized about defense
3. Derek Barnett‘s got a motor.
Whenever a guy’s “motor” is mentioned, it’s done so for one of two reasons. We’re basically calling a guy lazy, or we’re impressed with his work effort. Rookie defensive end Derek Barnett falls under the category of the latter. According to defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, the coaching staff has pointed out his effort quite a few times during OTAs. Apparently, there was one instance when he attempted a bull rush against right tackle Lane Johnson that didn’t work out in his favor, but all in all, it’s been a great two weeks for the rookie.
Barnett’s a former member of the Tennessee Volunteers who broke the program sack record of another former member of the Vols, former Eagles great Reggie White. Don’t worry. The obligatory comparison isn’t coming, but one thing has to be mentioned. Anyone who breaks any record by White will garner some attention, especially when the motor doesn’t turn off.
