An in depth look into Zach Ertz’s year-by-year progression
The 2016 Season:
The 2016 NFL season for the Eagles will always be remembered for a bevy of reasons. They had a new quarterback at the helm, rookie Carson Wentz. They had a rookie head coach in Doug Pederson. The hope was they’d be able to rely on their tight end, but following an acrobatic catch on Wentz’s first touchdown drive, Ertz struggled with injuries and consistency.
2016 was a season of regression for Ertz. He played in a career-low 14 games. He had 78 receptions, good for 816 yards and four touchdowns. That averages out to about 7.57 targets, 5.57 receptions and 62.5 yards per game. His best games came in, you guessed it, December.
You’d never guess it, but the first came against the Washington Redskins (we can’t make this up). Ertz seems to have the Redskins’ number. He managed ten receptions on 13 targets, good for 112 yards. The other highlight reel came as a result of playing a Dallas Cowboys squad with nothing to play for. He had 13 receptions, 139 yards and two touchdowns.
The 2017 season is around the corner, and, again, some of the talk surrounding the Eagles is about Ertz and his consistency.
